A Ten thousand foot view Desktop management through Virtualization utilizing SmartDeploy Enterprise
Today I will talk about a product that I think addresses a lot of the pain points in desktop management in some businesses today. That product is SmartDeploy Enterprise. The way this product works is the desktop management team will create “base images” in a variety of virtualization products, such as VMWare virtualization products, Microsoft Virtualization products, and VirtualBox. This virtual machine will be used as the reference machine with a Microsoft Windows operating system. Once the team has the image the way they want it, the use SmartDeploy to capture that image. SmartDeploy uses the same .wim format as Microsoft, making the images that SmartDeploy fully compatible with Windows Deployment Services WDS.
Now we have a great base image that can be deployed to our various computers. What separates SmartDeploy from other solutions is the Platform Pack. The Platform Pack allows the user to deploy the same image to various hardware platforms. So if your shop has Dell, HP and Lenovo machines the same image can be used throughout. I found that there are many Platform Packs are available at the company’s website. Next week I will dive further into some of the specifics of this product.
